Quality of Life and Paraesophageal Hernia
A recent study evaluating patients with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and associated paraesophageal hernia, showed significant improvement after surgery. Those who underwent, laparoscopic paraesophageal hernia repair had significantly improved quality of life as measured by 3 different scoring systems. This included RAND’s 36 item Short Form survey, the Reflux Symptom Index,as well as the GERD-Health Related Quality of Life scores. These scores improved at all postoperative time points.

When evaluating or screening for GERD,patients may come across one or several survey indexes. These screening tools can help the individual, as well as, physician recognize the severity of GERD. These tools can also help differentiate reflux from heartburn and how these two processes of the same disease can impact one’s life. When being initially evaluated for surgical intervention for GERD, Dr. Tutela, utilizes a number of clinical and objective measures to appropriately identify patients who would benefit from surgery.
